Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery

The cemetery dates back to at least 1849. It is known that some burials were made on private property as well.

The cemetery has seen continuous enlargement and improvement. Various additions have been deeded to the church for cemetery use.

In 1944 the ground was leveled and the tombstones set in line. The center road in the cemetery was discontinued in 1967 to make space for additional lots. Lloyd Buettner replatted the cemetery in 1968. The tornado of April 3, 1984, broke eight tombstones in the cemetery.

In June 1984, the Monroe County Genealogy group assisted in indexing the inscriptions on the grave markers. The inscriptions were copied and the index of burials is available in the church files and the Morrison-Talbot Library in Waterloo.

An equipment shed was erected in 1985.

The stones taken from the west wall in the 1941 addition were hauled to the cemetery to build a retaining wall on the east embankment.

A circle drive around the cemetery was made in 1967.
