Congregational Life
(1985-1991)

Lutheran Worship was purchased in October 1984. This was initially purchased to replace The Lutheran Hymnal, but many members wanted to continue using the old hymnal. Therefore, it is now in a rack under the pews and used for almost half of the services. Before these hymnals were used, a small black songbook without music was used. It was customary for the worshippers to carry their own songbooks with them to worship.

The church records were placed on microfilm in 1985 by Concordia Historical Institute. A reel of this film is in the church office.

Church Pews

Miss Clara Althoff left a large amount of money to the congregation in her will. Members were asked for suggestions for its use. The majority wanted new pews for the sanctuary. In 1986 the new pews were purchased and installed. The old pews, which were probably hand-hewn by Carl Guenther, were auctioned off to members. Two pews were kept and are in the school.

Church Sexton

Alfred Schmeding was honored for his 41 years of service as the church sexton in 1987. He began his task just before Rev. Krause's arrival and served through ten pastors and six teachers. He was honored with a plaque of appreciation, a monetary gift and one of the old pews. The pew he was given was the pew which he had occupied during his time as sexton.

New Addition to the 1929 School Building

There was a need for space in the kitchen in the school basement. Therefore a committee was formed in 1988 to look into expanding the building. This committee was Eugene Matzenbacher, Yvonne Trost, John Neumeyer, Donna DeWilde and Steven Tindall.

The committee presented the idea of expanding the floor space on both floors instead of expanding just the kitchen. On October 30, 1989, plans were made to implement this expansion on the north side of the building. It was completed October 12.

The 150th anniversary of the Saxon Immigration was observed by the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod in 1989.

In July 1989, Rev. Nelson informed the members that he had accepted a call to teach at Concordia College, Edmonton, Canada. He preached his farewell sermon on July 30, 1989.

Rev. Preece from Immanuel, Waterloo, was once again asked to be the vacancy pastor. In February 1990, he took a call to Dallas, Texas. The congregation then asked Rev. Darwin Schrader from Ruma to be the vacancy pastor.

In 1990 the historical display cases were made by Vernon Ruff, in honor of Vera Neubarth, and installed in the former schoolroom. Many of the church's artifacts, book and other articles are in the cases.

A new photocopier was purchased in February 1990 to replace the one obtained in 1981.

Rev. Michael Andrew Moore, an ordination candidate from the 1990 graduating class of Concordia Seminary, was called and installed on June 3. A service to initiate Holy Cross' 150th anniversary was held on All Saint's Sunday (November 4). The congregation assembled at the cemetery and processed to the sanctuary for service.

Midweek Advent services were held in December 1990 on the three Wednesdays before Christmas. A pictoral directory was printed in 1991.

Four sons of the congregation served in Operation Desert Storm: John Fuller, Allen Johannsen, Rodney Johannsen and Jeffrey Steining. A prayer service was held before the quarterly voter's meeting on January 14. War broke out on January 16.
