Tornado Strikes Church
(1984)

At 5:25pm, April 3, 1984, a tornado hit the church. It lifted the 120-year-old roof off of the trusses and deposited it on the lawn and parking lot in front of the church and school buildings. The stone tower and cross were virtually unhurt during the storm.

The church tower, the cross and the 1941 addition to the chancel were untouched by the tornado. The parsonage, school and teacherage received minor damage. A utility shed was demolished and eight tombstones in the cemetery were broken.

No one was injured. Rev. and Mrs. Nelson were not at home. Several meetings were scheduled for two hours later.

The state police, power company, members, neighbors and friends flooded to the scene when they heard about it. Salvaging started immediately. The hymnals were carried into the school. A large supply of plastic sheeting was obtained to cover the church pews from the rain that continued throughout the night.

Sightseers started to stream to the scene after the storm had passed. The visitors came throughout the entire night and for at least two days after. Coffee, soup, other refreshments and meals were prepared by the ladies and served to workers and visitors for about a week.

Many members did not go to work the following day so they could help with the cleanup. The pews and furnishings were moved to the large room in the school.

The regularly scheduled Lenten service was held the next evening, April 4. It was a combined Lenten service and service of praise and thanksgiving to God.

Members had a brief meeting after the service to begin plans for rebuilding. Volunteer carpenters and helpers began work on Wednesday (April 4). A new roof was applied within three days.

The ceiling, floor tile and carpenting had to be replaced due to water damage. Total cost of the damage was $38,178.55.

Confirmation of the 1984 class was postponed until Pentecost so that the service could once again be held in the sanctuary.

On July 1, 1984, a service of praise and thanksgiving was held. The community was invited. The senior and children's choirs sang. After the service, a special fellowship meal was given.
